Before he ever sat behind a desk, Dwayne Cambridge was on the tools — crafting cabinetry, designing verandas, and solving practical problems out in the field.
Now, as the Design Expert at ShedEx Fleurieu, Dwayne brings that same hands-on experience to the drawing board, delivering shed designs that aren’t just clever — they’re buildable, beautiful, and built to last.
A Career Built on Practical Experience
Dwayne’s journey through the building industry has been anything but linear — and that’s exactly what makes his perspective so valuable.
Starting out in cabinet making, he developed a sharp eye for detail and structure. He then moved into veranda design, fine-tuning his spatial thinking and customer service skills. Later, he spent time in the healthcare equipment industry, working as both an on-road technician and a representative — roles that demanded adaptability, patience, and creative problem-solving under pressure.
All of it shaped the designer he is today: someone who gets what’s possible on site because he’s been on site.
The Sweet Spot Between Creative and Constructable
At ShedEx Fleurieu, Dwayne thrives on taking a client’s ideas and turning them into clear, functional, council-ready designs. Whether it’s a backyard workshop, an off-grid hideaway, or a full commercial shed, he’s across every detail — from wind ratings to roof pitches — and always thinking a few steps ahead.
“Designing isn’t just about what looks good,” Dwayne says. “It’s about what works. It’s got to meet the brief, suit the property, and stand up to the conditions.”
Client-Centred from Day One
Dwayne’s approach to working with customers is all about listening, guiding, and making the process feel easy. He brings calm to the table, cuts through the jargon, and helps clients feel confident in their decisions.
“People might come in unsure, overwhelmed, or not knowing where to start,” he says. “It’s my job to take the pressure off, build trust, and make sure they walk away excited about what we’re creating.”
His first project win at ShedEx? That’s a memory that sticks.
“Signing that first ShedEx contract was a real moment for me,” he says. “It reminded me why I love this work — helping someone bring their idea to life and knowing it’s going to be done right.”
A Role with Room to Grow
Dwayne is excited about the future at ShedEx Fleurieu. As the business continues to grow and evolve, he sees real opportunity to keep improving how clients experience the design journey — with more innovation, more clarity, and more support from concept to completion.
“There’s something pretty satisfying about watching the business expand and being part of that momentum,” he says. “We’re building good things — in every sense of the word.”
Outside the Office
When he’s not designing sheds, you’ll find Dwayne metal detecting along the coastline, chasing live music, enjoying the Fleurieu’s food and wine scene, or getting off-grid for a weekend recharge. It’s these slower moments that give him the headspace to come back to work with clarity and fresh ideas.
“I’ve always believed that great design starts with listening — and ends with something you’re proud to build.”
