Dealing with us anonymously

Where it’s lawful and practical, you can deal with us anonymously or use a pseudonym, for example when asking a general question. For quotes, site visits, contracts and building work, we need accurate personal information to deliver our services properly.

The information we collect

Information you give us

• Your name, postal address, site address, email address and phone number
• Details about your project, including plans, measurements, site details and photos you send us
• Information needed for contracts, approvals, insurance and payments
• Anything you tell us in enquiries, forms, emails, phone calls or messages

• Your IP address, browser and device type
• Pages you view, how you arrived at our website, and actions you take, such as submitting a form
• Your general location, based on your IP address

Information from other sources

We may also obtain information from councils and planning authorities, land title records, engineers, certifiers, subcontractors and suppliers involved in your project, and from people who refer you to us.

Sensitive information

We don’t intentionally collect sensitive information, such as health information, ethnicity, political opinions or criminal history. If you give us sensitive information voluntarily, we’ll handle it in line with the APPs and delete it if we don’t need it.

We collect and use your information to:

• respond to your enquiries and prepare quotes
• design, engineer, obtain approvals for and construct your project
• manage contracts, invoices, payments and records
• communicate with you about your enquiry or project
• understand how our website is used and improve it
• send you marketing and show you our ads (see Advertising below)
• comply with our legal obligations
• protect against fraud and security issues

Advertising using your contact details

If you’ve asked us for a quote or you’re one of our customers, we may share your email address and/or phone number with Google and Meta so we can:

• show you relevant ads on their platforms, such as Google Search, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram
• avoid showing you ads that aren’t relevant, for example if you’ve already started a project with us
• reach new people with similar interests to our customers

Before your details are shared, they’re converted into a scrambled code (a process called hashing). Google and Meta use this code to match you to an existing account on their platforms, and handle it under their own terms and privacy policies.

If you don’t want your details used this way, contact us at [email protected] and we’ll exclude you from future uploads.

Direct marketing

We may send you marketing, such as updates, tips or offers, where you’ve agreed to it or where it’s reasonable based on your relationship with us. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link, or you can contact us at any time to opt out.

Who we share your information with

We may share your information with:

• authorised ShedEx staff
• subcontractors, suppliers, engineers and certifiers involved in your project
• councils, planning authorities and government bodies, where needed for approvals or required by law
• insurers, including building indemnity insurers
• finance providers, if you ask us to refer you
• IT, hosting, cloud, email and accounting service providers
• advertising and analytics providers, including Google and Meta
• our professional advisers, such as accountants and lawyers

We never sell your personal information.

Overseas disclosure

Some of our service providers, including Google, Meta and Microsoft, may store or process information outside Australia, including in the United States and other countries where they operate. We take reasonable steps to make sure these providers handle your information in line with the APPs.

How we protect your information

We take reasonable physical, administrative and technical steps to protect your information from misuse, loss, interference, and unauthorised access, change or disclosure. This includes secure systems, limited access and reputable cloud providers.

How long we keep your information

We keep personal information only as long as we need it to deliver our services, maintain business records, meet legal and tax requirements (including records about building work), and resolve disputes. When we no longer need it, we securely destroy it or remove identifying details.

Your rights

You have the right to:

• access the personal information we hold about you
• ask us to correct information that’s inaccurate, out of date or incomplete
• opt out of marketing and advertising audiences at any time
• make a complaint about how we’ve handled your information

We aim to respond to access and correction requests within 30 days.

Data breaches

If a data breach is likely to cause serious harm, we’ll notify the affected people and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) under the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.

Children

Our services aren’t intended for children under 16, and we don’t knowingly collect their personal information.

Our website links to other websites and social media platforms. They have their own privacy policies, and we’re not responsible for their content or how they handle information.
