The Truth About Sliding Doors: Why We Recommend Roller Doors

Ever wrestled with a sliding door that refuses to budge?

Or found yourself searching for replacement parts after strong winds ripped it off the tracks? You’re not alone. We get several calls a week from frustrated shed owners dealing with these exact problems.

At ShedEx Fleurieu, we take pride in delivering high-quality, low-maintenance sheds built to last. As a licensed builder, we don’t just sell shed kits and leave the installation to someone else—we take full responsibility for the sheds we design and construct. That means we need to be confident in every component we install.

Sliding doors? They just don’t meet our standards.

That’s why we don’t install sliding doors in our sheds. Instead, we exclusively recommend roller doors—and here’s why…..

1. Sliding Doors Look Cheaper—Until You Add Installation Costs

On paper, sliding doors look like the cheaper option—until you factor in installation.

While the raw materials cost less, installing a sliding door isn’t as simple as bolting on a track. The labour required to fabricate, weld, and install a sliding door system adds significant extra cost:

  • The door frame must be custom-fabricated and welded—which requires additional labour and expertise.
  • Roller headers and tracks need to be installed, adding more time and complexity.
  • Alignment issues are common, meaning more time (and money) spent on adjustments.

Roller doors, on the other hand, are faster and easier to install. With no welding, no extra framework, and minimal adjustments, the overall cost ends up being lower—despite the higher initial material price.

Bottom line? Sliding doors only seem cheaper at first glance. Once labour is factored in, roller doors win every time.

2. Sliding Doors Are Highly Vulnerable to Corrosion

One of the biggest problems with sliding doors is rust—especially in coastal environments like ours. The supporting frame of a sliding door is welded together, unlike the rest of your shed, which is completely weld-free.

🔧 Why does this matter? Welds are a weak point for corrosion, and once rust takes hold, it spreads rapidly. Over time, this weakens the door, causing it to jam, warp, or even fail entirely.

✅ In contrast, roller doors don’t require welding. They’re built from high-quality, COLORBOND steel that resists corrosion far better—making them a long-term, low-maintenance solution.

3. Sliding Doors Constantly Need Repairs

We hear the same complaints every single week from shed owners struggling with sliding door issues. The most common problems include:

🚪 Tracks corroding or filling with dirt and debris – making the door impossible to slide
Carriages wearing out or breaking – leaving the door stuck or difficult to move
🌬 Doors popping off their tracks during strong winds – sometimes flapping around like a loose sheet of metal

If your shed door needs constant repairs just to function, it’s not a good design.

⚠️ Already have a sliding door that needs fixing? We recommend contacting our mates at Filips Garage Doors—they’ll help get it sorted.

4. Sliding Doors Leave Gaps—And That’s a Problem

Unlike roller doors, which seal flush against the shed, sliding doors always have a small overlapping gap where the panels slide over each other. This creates multiple issues:

🐍 Pests & Vermin – Snakes, mice, and insects can squeeze through.
💨 Wind Pressure IssuesStrong winds can create pressure differences that rip the door off its track.
💧 Water Leaks – Rain can seep inside, damaging whatever’s stored in your shed.

Roller doors solve all of these issues. They sit snugly against the shed opening and can be fitted with vermin flashing to keep your shed dry, secure, and pest-free.

5. Security Risks: Sliding Doors Are Easier to Break Into

A shed is an investment, and security matters—especially if you’re storing tools, equipment, or vehicles inside.

🔓 Sliding doors are easier to force open because:
❌ They have an overlapping panel gap that can be pried open with a crowbar.
❌ Their tracks and rollers can be dislodged, making forced entry simple.
❌ Many sliding door locks are flimsy and offer minimal protection.

Roller doors, on the other hand, provide superior security, with reinforced locks, no weak points for prying, and a stronger structure overall.

6. But What If You Still Want a Sliding Door?

We understand that some customers still really want a sliding door. While we don’t recommend them, we’re not here to change your mind—we just won’t install it ourselves.

Instead, we can:

Build the shed with openings designed for a sliding door to be added by others.
Refer you to a specialist installer who can handle the supply and installation.

Why don’t we install them?

As a licensed builder, we have to guarantee our work. And given the ongoing problems we’ve seen with sliding doors, we don’t want to be liable for issues “later down the tracks” (pun intended).

Most shed retailers don’t have this problem because they only sell the kit—they don’t install it. They leave the responsibility to the owner and whoever they hire for the build. But at ShedEx Fleurieu, we’re committed to delivering quality from start to finish, which means only using materials and designs we trust.

7. The One Advantage of Sliding Doors (And Why It’s Still Not a Dealbreaker)

The only real advantage of sliding doors is that they provide full height clearance when open—known as the daylight opening.

This is because a roller door requires around 150mm of clearance at the top for the drum to roll up.

However, here’s the better solution:

We custom-design and build every shed based on your clearance needs. If you need extra height, it’s still cheaper to raise the overall height of the shed by 150mm than to install a problematic sliding door.

💡 And with roller doors available in sizes up to 5m high, clearance is rarely an issue.

8. Why Roller Doors Are the Better Investment

A roller door might cost more as a kit, but when you factor in:

🛠 Faster, easier installation (no welding, minimal adjustments)
🚪 Minimal maintenance (no rusted tracks or failing rollers)
🔒 Better security (no weak points for break-ins)
Automation options (remote-controlled, unlike sliding doors)

…you’re getting a superior, long-term solution at a better value overall.
