More Than Just the Boss: Michael Schubert and the Heart of ShedEx Fleurieu

At ShedEx Fleurieu, it’s never just about steel and screws—it’s about stories, relationships, and building something that lasts. And at the heart of it all is Michael Schubert, a bloke who didn’t just join the family business—he bought it, shaped it, and continues to grow it with heart.

Before the first phone rings or a concrete truck hits the road, Michael is already thinking five steps ahead. As Managing Director of ShedEx Fleurieu, he’s not just running the show—he’s walking the yard, checking in with the crew, and making sure every job is done properly.

From Overwhelmed to All In

“When I first started in the business, I was a little overwhelmed,” Michael admits. “I didn’t realise how complicated it was to build a shed—so many steps, so many people involved behind the scenes.”

Michael joined the business in 2010, which was originally founded by his parents, David and Sue Schubert, back in 2005. What quickly became clear was that ShedEx wasn’t just about sheds. It was about people.

“A business isn’t successful because of its fancy logo or a slick business card,” he says. “It’s successful because of the people in it. And for that to work, your team needs to feel valued and supported.”

He quickly realised the secret wasn’t in mastering the jargon—it was in building trust. Trust with his crew. Trust with customers. And trust with the local community.

Leading with Quiet Impact

Ask Michael what his team would say about him, and he doesn’t hesitate: “I reckon they’d say I’m pretty patient. I always want them to come to me with solutions, not just problems. It’s about ownership and backing your ideas.”

Behind the scenes, he’s constantly tweaking systems, removing obstacles, and making sure the team has what they need to succeed. “If I can make their workday smoother, they can focus on doing their best work.”

Why Sheds Matter

So, why all this care for something people often call “just a shed”?

“Because it’s never just a shed,” Michael says. “I love hearing how people are going to use their space. For some, it’s for storage. But for others, it’s an artist’s studio, a weekend workshop, a place to teach their kids how to change oil, or even to launch a small business. The possibilities are endless.”

That’s why ShedEx only uses genuine BlueScope and COLORBOND® steel, made right here in South Australia. No corners cut. No imported junk. And no passing the buck when it comes to council approvals or construction headaches.

“We handle the lot—from concept to completion,” Michael says. “Because if we wouldn’t build it for ourselves, we won’t build it for you.”

Rooted in Community

Being based in the Fleurieu Peninsula means more than just doing business. For Michael, it’s personal.

“This is where we live. Where we raise families. Where we support local causes that matter.”

One of those is Rotary Victor Harbor, where Michael serves as Chair of the Youth Committee. ShedEx has also proudly sponsored the Rotary Art Show for 19 years, backing the creativity and community spirit it brings to the region.

The Lessons That Stick

When asked about lessons learned, Michael doesn’t flinch. “Measure twice, cut once. It’s not just a rule for construction—it’s how we operate. We double-check everything so we can be proud of the finished result and so can the client.”

That mindset has carried him through the unexpected, like shifting schedules and surprise weather delays. “No two days are the same. But that’s what I love. The team adapts, we pivot, and we keep moving.”

What Sets ShedEx Apart?

Lots of companies sell sheds. But what makes ShedEx Fleurieu different?

“I think it’s that we care about the people just as much as the product. We’re a licensed builder, yes—but more importantly, we’re a team that genuinely wants to deliver something that adds value to your life. It’s not a transaction. It’s a partnership.”

That’s why, at the end of a project, Michael’s goal is simple: “I want the client to feel like we’ve built something we can both be proud of.”
